Short answer
FitScore rates every treadmill from 0 to 100 on six categories built from its specs and warranty: performance, durability, comfort, practicality, features and affordability. Each buying guide weights those categories for one intent, such as small spaces or running, so a treadmill can rank #1 in one guide and lower in another.
Key takeaways
- Six category scores, each from 0 to 100, calculated from structured product data.
- Every guide applies its own weights, chosen for the buyer it serves.
- Specs come from the Amazon US listing first, then the manufacturer.
- Only models sold and in stock on Amazon US are ranked; we show no prices.
A treadmill that is perfect for a runner can be a poor choice for a small apartment, and the reverse. A single star rating hides that. FitScore makes the trade-offs visible: it scores each model on what matters, then weights those scores for the buyer each guide is written for.
This page explains exactly what goes into each score, how the weights work, where the data comes from and the rules we follow before a treadmill appears in our rankings.
The Six FitScore Categories
Each category is scored from 0 to 100 from structured data we collect for every treadmill. The scoring rules are the same for every product, so two models with the same specs get the same category scores.
| Category | What it measures | Main inputs |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | How hard and how fast you can train | Motor power, top speed, maximum incline, lowest speed (for walking intents) |
| Durability | How well it should hold up | User weight capacity, machine weight (frame mass), warranty on frame, motor, parts and labor |
| Comfort | How it feels underfoot | Running surface width and length, cushioning system rating |
| Practicality | How easy it is to live with | Footprint, folding and folded size, machine weight, step-up height (for low ceilings) |
| Features | What the console and software add | Display type and size, programs, apps, Bluetooth, heart rate, motorized incline |
| Affordability | How accessible it is | The Amazon list price band at the time of scoring (prices are not displayed) |
Weights Change With the Buying Intent
Every guide applies its own weights to the six categories. The weights add up to 100%, and the FitScore is the weighted sum of the category scores. Some guides also add a noise score, built from measured walking noise when an independent test exists, the cushioning rating, the motor and the machine weight.
Here are real weightings used in our guides:
- Category scoring can also lean toward the intent. For example, the comfort score for tall runners gives deck length more weight, and the practicality score for low ceilings is driven by the step-up height.
- Reviews and comparisons reuse the weights of the guide where the product is mainly bought, and say which guide that is.
| Guide | Performance | Durability | Comfort | Practicality | Features | Affordability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Running | 40% | 25% | 20% | 5% | 5% | 5% |
| Small spaces | 10% | 10% | 15% | 50% | 5% | 10% |
| Streaming classes | 10% | 5% | 5% | 5% | 70% | 5% |
| Durability | 20% | 55% | 10% | 5% | 5% | 5% |
| Budget | 15% | 15% | 15% | 10% | 10% | 35% |
| Bad knees | 10% | 15% | 50% | 10% | 5% | 10% |
How a Ranking Is Built
- Candidates: treadmills that match the guide (for example walking pads for under-desk guides, manual treadmills for manual guides).
- Complete data only: a model with a missing score input is never ranked.
- Sold on Amazon US: every ranked model must be sold on Amazon.com; availability is checked from a US address, and a model confirmed out of stock is replaced if it stays unavailable for 7 days.
- Top 5 by FitScore: the five highest FitScores make the list, with at most two models from the same brand so you see real alternatives.
- Roles: the #1 is Best Overall; each other pick gets a role that reflects what it does best (for example Best Compact Pick).
Where the Data Comes From
Specifications come from the Amazon US listing first. When the listing is silent or unclear, we use the manufacturer page and say so. If the two disagree, the Amazon listing is what we score, because it describes the model you will receive.
Reviews also use qualitative evidence: independent tests and owner reports collected from many sources. We present it as reported experience, not as measurements of our own, and we never let it change a FitScore.
What FitScore Does Not Do
- It is not a lab test. We do not claim to have run every treadmill ourselves.
- It does not use star ratings or review counts.
- It does not show or track prices: Amazon prices change constantly, so every product links to its current listing.
- It is not paid placement. Brands cannot buy a position, and our affiliate commission is the same whichever model you choose.
Updates and Corrections
When a listing changes a spec, a warranty or its availability, the affected scores are recalculated and every guide, review and comparison that uses them is updated. Automated checks compare each published ranking with the current data and flag any difference before it can drift.
If you spot an error, contact us and we will check it against the listing. Our editorial policy and affiliate disclosure explain how we work and how the site is funded.
The Bottom Line
- FitScore = the six category scores multiplied by the guide weights.
- Top 5 per guide, at most two models per brand.
- Models with incomplete data are never ranked.
- Scores are recalculated when specs, warranty or availability change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Above 80 is excellent for the guide it appears in, 70 to 80 is a strong pick, and below 60 usually means a clear trade-off. Compare scores within the same guide, because the weights differ between guides.
Each guide weights the six categories for a different buyer. A heavy, powerful treadmill scores high for running and lower for small spaces.
No. It is calculated from specifications and warranty terms. Our reviews add independent tests and owner reports as context, without changing the score.
No. Rankings follow the FitScore and the availability rules on this page. We earn the same Amazon commission whichever product you buy.
Amazon prices change several times a day, so we link to the current listing instead of showing a price that could be out of date.
